Hello there!
You can call me Mrs. Jimerson. This is my 8th year teaching in Moreno Valley. I have a degree in both Criminal Justice and History. My single subject credential is in History-Social Science. In 8th grade, I was inspired by an awesome AVID teacher. Thanks to her guidance, I set long term goals and went after them. Today, I have my dream job as an AVID teacher.
My educational journey began in Vista, California. I was an AVID student in grades 7-12. From there I went to Grambling State University in Louisiana in 1994. After graduating summa cum laude I earned a Teaching Credential from Cal State San Bernardino in 2002. While working my way through school I applied for the Governor's Teaching Fellowship.
To my surprise, I was awarded the fellowship in 2003. The money paid for my training to become a teacher in the state of California. CBU is my new home. I am working toward a Master's degree in Teaching. My long term goal is to become a professor at a major university.
In the meantime I am having fun teaching the AVID exploratory class. In my spare time, I read, write, and watch the Disney channel with my children. I also like to dance. My favorite genres of dance are Salsa, Tango, Ballet, and Jazz. I am a DIVA that is why I teach AVID.
What is AVID?
AVID is a college prep class designed to help students prepare for thier future. We work on developing organizational skills, team-building, and strong work ethics. Goal setting is important to the program. Students are asked to set college as a long term goal and work towards that goal each day. In working toward this goal the class is involved in many activities. These activities include: pair-sharing, working in tutorial groups, reading, writing, having guest speakers, visiting college campuses, and research projects.
AVID to me, was a life changing event. I entered the program without a purpose. My teachers taught me how to dream. They gave me support which was the ladder to reach my dreams. Now I have the courage to dream with my eyes open!
